Chinese lanterns are illuminated decorative structures with a history spanning more than two thousand years. Originally used in festivals and ceremonies to ward off darkness and bring good fortune, they evolved from simple paper-and-bamboo lanterns into the giant, hand-painted silk and steel masterpieces seen at modern lantern festivals around the world.
Today the craft reaches its highest expression in Zigong, Sichuan — the city recognized as the birthplace of the Chinese lantern festival. A true Zigong chinese lantern is built in layers: a structural steel frame is bent and welded by hand, premium silk or weatherproof fabric is stretched over it, master painters color every surface, and energy-efficient LED systems bring the piece to life at night. The result is a lantern that looks stunning by day as a sculpture and transforms into glowing art after dark.
